Thanks! I agree; it is an interesting problem to me because it doesn't seem like you just "get over it" and then don't have to worry about it ever again--one has to make a habit of being aware of it.
It is hard not to want to move up within a hierarchy in light of people liking you more. And as you are saying, we can jump out of one rat race only to fall into another that feels less like a race because there are fewer well established competitors, etc. But I don't think that it is fatal to the possibility of telling the truth or to believing truths that are deleterious to our social standing; I just think that it is more difficult than it intuitively feels.
