Great post. Reminds me of Montaigne’s “Of Pedantry” essay. “Now we must not attach learning to the mind, we must incorporate it; we must not sprinkle, but dye.”

Reminded me of Schopenhaur.

But there's a third way in btwn reading and thinking which is too often downplayed: dialogue. The give-and-take with sharp minds responds to our thoughts where we are and if one chooses a good interloc- then there is always surprise and intellectual growth.

I don't know why this Socratic method is not part of the educational conversation. My thought os that most people are too fragile to be able to honestly quest for truth while in conversation. Not sure...

Right, dialogue is an important element if you are a Socratic. It seems right to say that most do not have the psychological toughness required to endure Socratic questioning. There is a lot to say about the place of dialogue in between reading and thinking; I hope we can discuss it more soon.
