C.S. Lewis and Modernity

Willing Slaves, Abolition of Man, and Screwtape Letters

Hello and welcome to Montana Classical College! Today, I am joined again by my friend BigTuna. Today, we are going to discuss C.S Lewis; his essay “Willing Slaves of the Welfare State”, and his books, The Abolition of Man and The Screwtape Letters.

  • Tuna has big news! He is a launching a podcast, Cast Your Nets, where he will: “invite various guests from around the internet to come discuss one of my favorite subjects, which has been the beating heart of Western Life for nearly two millennia: the Holy Bible. My guests will help to choose a topic from the God’s Word as narrow as a single verse, or as broad as a whole book— sometimes, we’ll zoom in on a key theme or character. I and my guests will discuss our favorite ideas, toughest interpretations, and greatest lessons from the good book; and try to grasp what it might have to say about the cultural & personal circumstances of today’s day & age.” Check it out!

  • Here is Tuna’s helpful essay on Lewis, “CS Lewis: Modern Prophet and Secret Dissident

  • Our previous conversation on McKinley / when US decline began and my conversation on his podcast on American literature and the American character.
